I have learned a lot about copyright laws and there was actually some surprising information. I was very surprised to find out that teachers cannot show a movie is class just for fun, instead of going outside for recess or something. Teachers are only allowed to show videos if they directly relate to the lesson and content being taught. I also learned that teachers can only make a copy of something for each student, they cannot make as many copies as they want. If they want to make copies of something year after year then they would need to get permission. I also learned that facts are not copyrighted, and information from before 1923 is not copyrighted, therefore they are free to use.

I do not know much about copyright laws and have a feeling that some things that teachers do normally may not be allowed. I would like to know for example if a teacher borrows a workshop and makes copies from it to use with her own class, is tis legal or illegal?

Chapter 2 – “What Brain Research Tells us About Learner Differences”

1. brian functions: regogntion networks – rear part of brain deals with senses, cortex- allows you to act skillfully like moving, walking, talking, reading, etc. 3rd – central part is the affective networks- value system, evaluating what is important. These are the 3 main components and all students differ in each of these.

Chapter 3 – “Why We Need Flexible Instructional Media”

1. learning materials/methods: fixed media is traditional, new/digital media is felxible, it adapts to students’ differences, so its not the same to everyone, it may carry the same information but will display it differently

Chaper 4 – “What is Universal Design for Learning” -

1. all buildings being built with ramps, elevators, etc.
learning- ways to set goals that are appropraite for students, should have different ways to meet these goals not just one way. same metohds do not work for all students, different ways to represent information, different ways to express what they know, different ways to engage students

Chapter 5 approaches goals – using UDL to set clear goals

1. different ways to meet goals, all students can reach the set goals

Chapter 6 – materials and methods for reaching goals

1. indiv. instructions: highlight crticial features- supporting background knowledge

Chapter 7 – focuses on assessment

1. how to assess progress: using new media, respond to indiv. differences

Chapter 8 – “Making Universal Design for Learning a Reality.”

1. examples from real classrooms: number of supports to make UDL possible, no perfect example, different issues to consider, resources
